Unconventional Printmaking: Exploring the Rules of Craft

In this class, we will explore Corita Kent’s Rules of the Immaculate Heart through creative conversation prompts and mind mapping, to produce our own unique rules and prints at the end of the session!
Sister Corita Kent was a changemaker and artistic leader, who saw a vision for the religion of art to extend past ego-driven differences and into a peaceful world of love. She was the head of the art department at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles, and built a program designed to mobilize the work of women in the school, with a focus on Printmaking, for its ability to reproduce art objects within the control of the maker. Her relationship with print is intimate, as she was a self-taught screen printer, and her work radiates an intimate knowledge of her own hand, the world, and her God. Kent’s prints utilize text, scripture, mark-making, vibrant colors, drawings, and collage, and were often utilized to deliver anti-war/peacetime messages in the social upheaval of the 60’s. During her time at Immaculate Heart College, she created a list of 10 rules for her art students.
Supplies in this class are meant to be accessible, forgoing some regulations of printmaking expectations in order to allow you, the student, an ability to create without having to purchase the very expensive materials many professionals will tell you are essential for creation. Though supplies will be provided, please bring in anything you desire to work with in your print. You can utilize flat objects, like paper cut-outs or string, to create negative images to print!
Itinerary:
Day 1: We’ll start with introductions before diving into some background on Sister Corita Kent and Rules of the Immaculate Heart Mindmapping. We’ll break for lunch and return to begin printmaking strategies and exploration.
Day 2: On the second day of class, we’ll continue our exploration of printmaking. We’ll close by exchanging prints and reflecting on the experience of exploring the rules of craft.

Meet Your Instructor:

Flower Apley
Flower is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, performer, and writer, whose mission is to share the healing powers of making with the masses. They prioritize accessibility, authenticity, and wide definitions of craft and concepts to bring their love of art to everyone. For far too long, the art world has been separate from the majority of America, requiring that people “buy in” to artistry, with fancy degrees and supplies. Flower aims to destroy this notion, by showing others that with an idea, some creative thought, and whatever you can get your hands on, you can make something that just may help the world! When they are not working on ideas, teaching, and projects, Flower loves hiking with their massive, fabulous dog, Magnificent Awesome Gorgeous Superstar
(MAGS), swimming in one of Northern Michigan’s bountiful lakes, dreaming big with their incredible pals, and dancing like no one is watching!
