Sustainable Fly Tying

Learn the craft of fly tying in a region with a wealth of freshwater streams and rivers! Go beyond the sport of fly fishing. Discover the world of hand-sourcing and crafting flies using natural or found second-hand materials. We’ll begin with introductions and share our backgrounds and interests in fly tying and fishing. Then we’ll discuss the tools and essential information related to fly tying. There will be time for hands-on practice, followed by some time for discussion and questions. After a more robust demonstration, students will have the opportunity to continue exploring variations, practice fly-tying, and discuss how to be a sustainable angler.

Meet Your Instructor:

Carter McMillen
Carter McMillen is a fly fishing guide here in Traverse City. He takes guided fishing trips and works at a fly shop, Streamside Orvis, in Traverse City. Carter loves fishing, the outdoors, his dog and doing activities that combine all of those things! His goal is to teach the basics of fly tying, to help students understand why it is that fly tiers use what they use, and to share how to be a sustainable angler (using natural materials sourced by you or cheap “garbage” that you can reuse into tying material). Carter hopes that students will learn a new skill and have the desire to catch fish on their new fly!
