Wet Felting Sauna Caps

Transform fluffy wool into a sturdy, whimsical sauna cap! Sauna caps are designed to support the ritual of sauna by regulating your body temperature. Just in time for Traverse City’s Sauna Festival, you’ll learn about the properties of wool, and how the material lends itself to being the ideal sauna cap. You’ll also gain introductory skills to three dimensional wet felting, and the chance to explore and play with material in designing a sauna cap of your very own!
Itinerary:
We’ll start by gathering and sharing some introductions! We all arrive at fiber craft with varying levels of experience, so we’ll be sure to first cover some of the basic properties of wool. After a brief lecture, we’ll begin with a demonstration of two dimensional wet felting, followed by some time for hands-on practice. We’ll have a break for lunch before returning for a demo and some practice with three dimensional wet felted vessels. We’ll have some time to begin making plans for our sauna caps before diving right into our individual sauna cap projects! We’ll finish the day with wrinkled, prune-like fingers and enjoy some community before sharing our projects with one another and closing out the workshop.

Meet Your Instructor:

Lauren Dahl
Lauren first learned the craft of wet-felting from her teaching mentor at a Minneapolis based Waldorf school. She began to share the joys of making woolen goods with her Kindergarten students, and was quickly captured by the wonder of handwork. She left the Kindergarten for a few months of farming and crafting in Sweden where she continued to explore handwork, including shearing and processing raw wool. Lauren spent some time wet felting as an intern at North House Folk School in Grand Marais before moving out to the Grand Traverse Area to join the team at Green Door Folk School where she continues to felt, instruct, and grow deeper in the craft community.
