Intro to Woodworking: Charcuterie Boards

May 23 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
$120.00 – $180.00

This class is a beginner’s introduction to basic woodworking skills using power tools found in a standard workshop. The day will culminate in a completed charcuterie board that each participant can take home and enjoy for years to come. Everyone will be required to bring their own safety glasses and hearing protection.

We’ll start the morning with a group introduction, sharing what sparked our interest in the class and what we’re hoping to carry forward from the experience. We will have a general discussion on wood characteristics, including “wood movement” design considerations and basic wood construction joints. A hands-on demonstration will be conducted on how to transform rough sawn lumber into a dimensional piece of wood (S4S – surfaced four sides) that will be ready for general wood working and furniture projects. The jointer, planer, and the table saw will be used for this process. These dimensional pieces of lumber will be used for a panel glue-up demonstration which is the basic element in a charcuterie board.

After lunch we tackle the construction of our own charcuterie boards. The wood species in these boards will be a combination of cherry, curly maple, and walnut. We will transform a pre-glued “wood blank” into a completed charcuterie board using the following tools: table saw, power miter saw, band saw, oscillating spindle sander, drill press, router table, random orbital sander, and laser etching machine.
