IPR Radio Bootcamp

Learn the magic of radio! Students will experience what it takes to tell stories in an audio-only format. Broadcast journalists from Interlochen Public Radio will reveal the secrets of radio from how they catch the stories in their microphones, to editing and mixing for the airwaves. Your stories might even end up on the radio!
Participants will be required to identify a person in advance to be an interview subject. Participants will be asking interviewees about their favorite family recipe, ideally (but not necessarily) while they’re cooking the meal. Their interview subject will need to be available Saturday afternoon. The interview will take about 1 hour.
Participants will also need a set of headphones (earbuds are okay) and a recording device of some kind. This could be as simple as a smart phone with a voice recorder app. They’ll also need a laptop to download and edit the files.
Meet Your Instructor:

Austin Rowlader
Austin is a freelance reporter and producer for Interlochen Public Radio. He’s passionate about finding voices that we don’t often hear on the airwaves, and teaching people how to make stories out of them. When he’s not making radio, you’ll find him in his backyard daydreaming.
